How to user test with invited testers in low-connectivity environments

Userbrain's mobile testing app enables powerful on-location UX research, even when dealing with unstable Wi-Fi or cellular coverage.

Last updated on 28 Nov, 2025

Userbrain’s mobile app supports on-site user testing, but intermittent or lost connectivity can impact uploads. Follow these guidelines to maximize success when testing in low-data environments (e.g., outdoor events, conferences, or remote locations).

  1. Connectivity Requirements

    • Starting a Test: Requires initial internet connection to load the test tasks.

    • During Recording: An internet connection can be intermittent or spotty. Our app records locally.

    • Uploading Results: Requires stable connection post-test to upload the recording to our servers and into your Userbrain account.

  2. App Behavior in Low-Connectivity

    • If connection drops mid-test, recording continues locally.

    • Uploads automatically retry when connection is restored (app must remain open).

    • If the app is closed or the device runs low on memory, interrupted uploads may fail without a manual retry option.

Recommended workflow for environments with unstable connections

Before Testing

Preload Content: Ensure testers load any required assets (e.g., maps, images) in advance if possible. This is done by loading these assets on the device initially while on a stable connection. This data is stored, or cached, locally on the device.
Close Background Apps: Free up any device memory in use with other apps.

During Testing

Keep the App Foregrounded: Avoid switching to other apps during/after the test until upload completes.
Monitor Connectivity: If connection drops, pause testing until stable (if possible).

After Testing

Reconnect Promptly: Return to a stable network and reopen the Userbrain app to resume uploads.
Verify Uploads: Check the Userbrain dashboard to confirm all recordings are submitted.
